Scordia
Scordia is a city of about 17,000 inhabitants
located at 150 m a.s.l., in a large citrus area that stretches from the Margi
Valley to Lentini.
Laid out on an orthogonal grid, with at its
heart the central Palazzo dei Branciforte, the town was founded by the Prince
Antonio Branciforte and was part of the feudal estate of Scordia Sottana. The
Brancifortes owned it as far as 1807.
It has a number of interesting cultural sites.
The Mother Church is dedicated to the patron
saint Rocco and contains a worth-mentioning 1600’s wooden statue of the titular
saint and a painting depicting the Virgin of the Holy Rosary.
The church of Sant’Antonio da Padova and, next to it, the convent of the Reformed Fathers date back to the 17th century. The latter has a fine cloister and 1700’s frescoes depicting scenes from the life of Jesus and St. Francis. The church also houses interesting works, such as a painting of Our Lady of Sorrow and various 1700’s frescoes.
The Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, ornamented
with stuccoes and paintings, is also worth-seeing.
