Piedimonte Etneo is a city at 348 m a.s.l. on
the slopes of Etna volcano. It totals just over 4,000 inhabitants.
Originally named “Belvedere”, it was founded by Ignazio Sebastiano Gravina
Amato, the Prince of Palagonia. Under one of its heirs, namely Ferdinando
Gravina, the city saw a period of remarkable economic and urban growth.
The major building in town is the 1700’s Mother
Church with a basical plan divided into three naves, containing several works
of art such as a statue of Sant’Ignazio and some marble altars.
The Chiesa
dell’Immacolata, magnificently furnished and with precious 1700’s wooden
altars, is also worth-seeing.
