Mascali is a city in the lowest area of the
Etna Park, that stretches out to the Ionian coast. During the Norman Age –
since 1092 – it was part of a feudal barony that comprised what now are the
cities of Giarre, Milo, Riposto and Sant’Alfio. Successively, it became a
County, remaining such until 1812. The city was largely reconstructed after the
1928 Etna eruption. Among its main attractions is the three-naves’ Mother
Church housing a precious 1700’s marble statue representing the patron saint,
San Leonardo. In the city environs, on the Etna slopes, is the 1200’s church of
the Nunziatella, preserving valued frescoes among which is a Christ
Pantocrator. A necropolis going back to the 7th century stands
nearby.
