Camporotondo Etneo
The city of Camporotondo Etneo was founded
around the mid-16th century by the Marquis Reitano. In 1669, it was
heavily damaged, like many other villages in the Etna slopes, by the eruption
of the volcano. Only several years later and after an extensive reconstruction,
it managed to regain its original circular design (hence the name Camporotondo,
standing for “circular field”).
The city economy mainly relies on agriculture,
boasting notable outputs of olive, citrus fruits and almond.
The church of S. Antonio Abate is the city’s
main attraction.
