The Piazza Maggiore is surrounded by some of
the most prestigious buildings in Aci S. Antonio, such as the Duomo, with its
imposing façade, rebuilt the 1693 earthquake; opposite to it rises the church
of St. Michael the Archangel. From the piazza begins the via Vittorio
Emanuele that terminates at the ruined Palazzo Riggio. The city has undergone
numerous changes throughout the centuries, also due to Etna’s frequent
eruptions and to a terrible earthquake that badly damaged the city in 1693. The
city’s present planning mainly dates from the post-quake reconstruction.
